The St John Ambulance & Rescue Service
The St John Ambulance & Rescue Service has been nominated for Emergency Hero of the Year.
About
Based in Guernsey for 89 years, St John has been serving the community across the Channel Islands, including Alderney, Herm and Sark, delivering passionate and professional clinical service.
‘It makes us really proud to be nominated, to be recognised is very humbling. The staff see things most people never will,’ said chief ambulance officer, Mark Mapp.
The service has around 70 paid staff and another 60 volunteers, making it all a big team effort involving many other organisations and services. The youngest members of the service are in their twenties, while the oldest have reached their seventies.
‘They help others who are hurt or sick,’ said the nominator, who would like to remain anonymous.
The service receives 10,000 annual calls from islanders, 6,000 of them emergency ones.
‘We’re one big family, the feeling of camaraderie and belonging is what the staff enjoy the most,’ said Mr Mapp.
The nominator applauded the entire service for all its hard work through the years and constant support of the community.
‘We’re here to serve humanity,’ said Mr Mapp.
