Sue and Derek Topley

Sue and Derek Topley have been nominated for the Grandparents of the Year Award.

About

The couple have been nominated for their consistent hard-work and dedication to their entire family.
Mr and Mrs Topley have 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and have been described by their nominator and granddaughter, Rhiannon Byrne, as ‘the beating heart of our entire family.’
One of their youngest great-grandchildren, Mrs Byrne’s one-year-old son, is looked after by Mr and Mrs Topley during the week whilst she is at work. Acting as childminders, taxi drivers, chefs, counsellors, cleaners and much more, the pair are ‘the glue that holds the family together,’ said Mrs Byrne.
‘They are always putting others first and never asking for anything in return. Their wisdom and support mean the world to us and without them we would be completely lost.’
Mrs Topley shared their pride to have been nominated for the award. ‘We are shocked and a bit tearful,’ she said.
‘We just enjoy spending time with the family and helping them out or even being a shoulder to cry on.
‘Doing things with and for the family keeps us young.’
