Steve Hutchison has been nominated for Teacher of the Year
About
‘My dream vocation,’ said the Blanchelande Junior School maths and PE teacher nominated for Teacher of the Year.
Steve Hutchison began teaching in North Devon 36 years ago. He taught in Egypt and Kuwait for three years where he met his wife, then returned to Guernsey.
‘The children always give so much – they love PE,’ Mr Hutchison said.
One highlight for Mr Hutchison was training his tag rugby teams - Arry’s Army and Tilly’s Taggers - named after his children.
‘Some of those players I still see now in my duties as a Priaulx League referee,’ he said. ‘It’s great to see so many children continue their sporting journey with the many opportunities available for local sports.’
‘He is an all-round great teacher who is loved by so many of his current and past students. He genuinely cares about them and wants them to meet their full potential,’ said one nominator.
‘Mr Hutchinson is kind, supportive and encouraging. He will say if you make a mistake that it’s okay as it is proof you are trying,’ said their son, who is taught by Mr Hutchison.
Katie White, another nominator, is the mother of three children taught by Mr Hutchison. ‘Happy children is a good sign that they’ve been taught by him,’ said Ms White. ‘He supported my daughter when she was finding her feet. He took the time to help her learn tennis and has taken the children sea-swimming which is important for their confidence.’
Mr Hutchison regards teaching as a privilege. ‘30 years teaching in Guernsey – a nice round number,’ he said.
