St John Ambulance & Rescue Service has been nominated for Emergency Hero of the Year
About
St John Ambulance & Rescue Service has been nominated for the award by Thea Thomas because they save lives, help others and are always friendly.
Miss Thomas is not alone in her praise, as 96% of people who used the emergency ambulance service in the past year rated their overall experience as good, very good or excellent.
The staff of 50 work round the clock to deliver frontline care throughout the Bailiwick. Providing emergency ambulances for Guernsey and Alderney, a marine ambulance service, and non-emergency transport service, the team responded to 10,000 calls in 2025.
Speaking on behalf of the team, paramedic Jim Cathcart said that most people join the ambulance service because they wanted to make a difference. Although there are many difficult parts of the job, receiving thanks was always appreciated.
‘We often see people on the worst days of their lives,’ he said. ‘Some cases can be challenging for a variety of different reasons, sometime technically or clinically challenging, sometimes emotionally challenging. We work as part of a team and a lot of people find support from their workmates helps them deal with those challenges.’
Everyone involved plays a vital role in the developing profession. Demand varies from day to day, and if all other ambulance services are busy, off-duty staff are often called into work to provide cover.
‘No two days are the same, but every day our crews provide care, compassion and treatment for the sick and injured,’ said Mr Cathcart.
