Sophie Veron
SOPHIE VERON has been nominated for the Diversity and Inclusion award.
About
Miss Veron is Guernsey’s first athlete to compete and place nationally in adaptive surfing.
Two years ago, she took up adaptive surfing after health problems meant she could no longer participate in sports like she had in the past.
After just nine sessions of training with Aqua Health, Miss Veron competed at the National Adaptive Surfing Championship in Bristol and won a bronze medal.
At this year’s competition, Miss Veron doubled her points.
‘Sophie has shown that adaptive surfing can happen in Guernsey,’ said her nominator, Rachael Green, on behalf of Aqua Health.
‘I’ve never met someone so determined. Nothing gets her down.
‘I’m proud to be able to work with her.’
Miss Veron said: ‘Everyone surfs in their own way. The fact I can surf lying down with a chest raiser and do it my way is incredible.
'It’s great for mental and physical health. It’s a special place for me and it’s so nice to get out in the water.’
‘It’s a big thing to ask for an adaptation at a sports club.
'If I can inspire someone to take up surfing then that’s my job done.’
Miss Veron is currently training for a competition in October and is waiting for 2026's competition calendar to be released to see what she can do next year.
