Simon Welch
Simon Welch has been nominated for Emergency Hero of the Year.
About
Earlier this year Mr Welch helped save the life of Leon Ogier, who had collapsed from a heart attack on the grass at the Halfway.
‘You can never anticipate that this kind of thing can happen to you,’ said Mr Welch.
‘You feel like you’re the only person they’ve got.'
Immediately pulling over as he was driving into Town, Mr Welch approached Mr Ogier.
‘He was sat upright and shaking then he collapsed and fell unconscious and went into cardiac arrest.’
Calling the emergency services, Mr Welch was guided through how to perform CPR by JESCC until police and an ambulance arrived.
‘It was terrifying to be honest – I was on my own with someone who was basically dying,’ he said.
‘Simon’s bravery and willingness to help another islander should be commended. It really shows how good of a person he is,’ said his nominator, who would like to remain anonymous.
Since the incident Mr Welch has completed a CPR and defibrillator training course, something he likely would not have done had the incident never occurred.
‘I think this shows how one moment can change the way you look at yourself and everyone around you,’ said the nominator.
Once Mr Ogier recovered, the pair went out for dinner and still see one another monthly.
‘I’ve gained a friend from this,’ said Mr Welch.
