Education lead of the Pollinator Project, Sharon Hickman, is shocked to be nominated for the award.
Since joining the project nine years ago, Mrs Hickman volunteers to educate the bailiwick’s primary school children through assemblies, identification leaflets, and the organisation of an annual art competition. 
One of the largest art competitions in the Channel Islands, this year’s iteration saw over 1,300 entries and this year also saw the initiative received its 10,000th overall entry. Each entrant is provided with a free pack of flower seeds to grow at home. 
‘It’s so rewarding to see the reactions of children to our presentations and the enthusiasm they show in creating wonderful works of art’, she said. 
Mrs Hickman’s work is all in the service of educating all ages about the importance of protecting the island’s habitats. She is responsible for bringing scientists and headline speakers from the UK to Guernsey in order to raise awareness. The Pollinator Project encourages those at home to create pollinator patches, plant flowers, create bee or bug hotels, and reduce the use of pesticides by using alternative options.
‘Always the quiet person in the background, Sharon never pushes herself forward. But she’s the one that makes the difference. She organises, she brings people together, and she is 100 percent dependable’, said nominator Vicky Green. ‘Sharon would be the first to say that she has help from others, but she’s the heart and soul of this project.’
