Selina Moodliar

Selina Moodliar has been nominated for Teacher of the Year

About

‘No two classrooms are ever the same,’ says a Le Rondin teacher nominated for the award.
Selina Moodliar trained to be a teacher in South Africa, where she researched emotion within learning support contexts. Before moving to Guernsey in 2023, she taught at a school for the visually impaired.
‘It was a challenging transition, but the support, mentoring, and professional development I received here allowed me to carry across the skills that mattered most.’
Ms Moodliar, whose students call Selina, found that sign-supported speech allowed her to communicate with children who otherwise found it difficult to express themselves.
Meeting a child in their own mode of language, she said, is a privilege not taken for granted.
Joe Hamon, one of her students, nominated Ms Moodliar.
‘Joe never stops talking about Selina,’ said his mother.
‘She has plenty of patience, and Joe used to say how fun her classes were.’
Ms Moodliar felt proud to see Le Rondin achieve the UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting award in 2024.
‘It’s not just a school, but a facility that caters for every child, every day.’
‘Looking ahead, I hope to continue this journey by contributing to trauma-informed professional development, drawing together my research, my lived experiences, and everything I’ve learned.’
