About
Guernsey Raiders bar team has nominated the club secretary ‘at the heart of it all’ for Sports Volunteer of the Year.
Sadie Merrien has served the club for around 20 years. She was originally with Guernsey Ladies until they merged with the Raiders.
Mrs Merrien has organised firework displays, raffles, parties, and now sells merchandise on match days.
‘I’m the back-up for a lot of things. When people leave, I have the experience to help everything run at a regular pace,' she said.
Since moving up a league, the club has come under pressure to modernise.
‘It’s been really time-consuming to keep everything running smoothly.’
Mrs Merrien shared the praise around, also thanking the club's director of rugby, financial director, and chairman for their tireless work.
The bar team noted her countless hours of hard work spent attending meetings, preparing agendas, and ensuring follow-up to committee actions.
‘Sadie is usually the one working tirelessly in the background to make sure everything comes together seamlessly, and she does not ever want any praise.’
Mrs Merrien said both her children have got involved in rugby.
‘My daughter has played for Guernsey Ladies, and in the UK for Trojans Women. This is a way for me to give back.’
