Roustel Ward

Roustel Ward has been nominated for Angel of the Year

About

‘The most rewarding part is being able to make that difference,’ said senior staff nurse at Roustel Ward, Yvonne Bynoe, after hearing her team had been nominated for the award. ‘We’re all for the same goal: taking care of patients,’ she added.
The team at the challenging behaviour unit is made up of carers, nurses, doctors, cleaners, kitchen staff, a consultant, and a dietician.
‘We meet them at their point of need,’ said Mrs Bynoe. ‘It’s about trying to figure out what the patients are trying to communicate. You learn about them and talk to their family to see how their individual needs manifest certain behaviours.’
‘Every member of staff knows and cares for each patient as an individual which allows for such a sense of connection to be felt,’ said the team’s nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.
‘One particularly special quality is the dedication to kindness demonstrated everyday. Each and every staff member treats patients with dignity and respect.
‘They treat patients as individuals, as opposed to people with dementia. The staff take the time to learn not just a patients name, but a backstory.
‘Recently, despite a very busy shift, the staff made time to clear and decorate a room so we could celebrate a birthday in a way that was calm and memorable, a gesture that truly went above and beyond.
‘I believe that it’s this exceptional kindness, the going above and beyond for every single patient, and family, that truly deserves celebration.’
