Richard Vahey has been nominated for Bailiwick Community Hero

About

Creator of Facebook pages Good News Guernsey and Guernsey Guardians, Richard Vahey has been nominated for the award.
‘Richard Vahey is a wonderful human being with a heart of gold,’ said nominator Christina Gillman.
‘Good News Guernsey has been wonderful in showing the good things that happen daily in Guernsey.’
The recently set up Guernsey Guardians Facebook page brings attention to a new worthy cause each month. ‘He has now raised thousands of pounds for local charities: Margo’s Marvellous Mind, Crissi McMahon, the Ivy Trust, the Guernsey Downs Syndrome Group, and more,’ said Mrs Gillman.
‘He is the epitome of not all heroes wear capes.’
Using Guernsey Guardians as a platform, Mr Vahey has been able to raise £42,000 for Crissi McMahon’s potentially life-saving dendritic cell immunotherapy and raised £2,000 within 36 hours for Martine-Marie White to get a new mobility scooter.
‘I encourage people to dig deep because I know times are hard,’ said Mr Vahey. ‘I’ve introduced the £1 challenge where I encourage the members to give just £1 a month to a good cause. Just think about how much good that could do for local people.’
A few months ago, Mr Vahey had promised the members of Guernsey Guardians that if by August they could raise £75,000 for three-year-old Margo Foley to receive stem cell and extensive physiotherapy treatments to help treat her quadriplegic cerebral palsy, he would get a tattoo in honour of Margo’s Marvellous Mind. The money was raised by July and Mr Vahey’s thigh is now adorned with three Ms.
