Pedro Duarte has been nominated for Teacher of the Year.

About

Five years ago, Mr Duarte experienced a career change right at the peak of the Covid pandemic, after moving from Portugal to the UK he filled a range of roles before realising teaching was where he belonged.
‘I have only known him for two years yet the impact he’s had on my life has been huge,’ said his nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous. ‘He has helped me grow my confidence and supported my passion in helping the environment.'
After moving to Guernsey, Mr Duarte taught at La Mare de Carteret High School for two years before moving to the Sixth Form Centre in the past year, where he teaches A-level environmental science and IB environmental systems and societies.
Mr Duarte’s nominator praised his enthusiasm, light-heartedness and strong will, making him a one-of-a-kind teacher.
‘He has allowed me to follow my passion and grow so much as a person,’ said his nominator, ‘I am proud to say he was my teacher.'
‘My favourite thing about my role is being able to pass on knowledge for their future,’ said Mr Duarte, who felt surprised and flattered to be nominated for this award.
‘There’s nothing challenging, I think it’s the best profession in the world.'
