Paul Montague
Paul Montague has been nominated for the Teacher of the Year Award.
About
30 years ago, in 1995, Mr Montague returned to Guernsey to teach at the Grammar School, leading religious studies, coaching rugby and more recently teaching philosophy in the Sixth Form.
‘I’ve known Paul since 1995, we were teachers together at Grammar,’ said his nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.
‘He is such an honest person with lots of integrity but also a good sense of fun.'
‘I thought it’s good to recognise someone, I’ve never done anything like this before, but I thought Paul was a fine example,’ said his nominator.
Mr Montague said that he felt honoured to receive this nomination, describing it as a lovely surprise as he retired from teaching to take on his role as a people's deputy in the States.
In the 1990s, Mr Montague was working in the finance sector when he decided to train as a secondary teacher.
He said he had always enjoyed discussing big ideas.
‘Just being in class with students can be so rewarding, and then there are also the myriad interactions with students throughout a normal day,’ said Mr Montague.
The high turnover of staff at the Grammar School and the rise in mental health problems were two challenges Mr Montague identified for the future of education.
Mr Montague said he hoped to carry forward the knowledge from his teaching days into his new role.
