Ollie Guillou

Ollie Guillou has been nominated for the Arts Contribution award for bringing international awareness to Guernsey and its history through his podcast series The Guernsey Deportees.

About

In the podcast, Mr Guillou interviewed his grandmother, Jill Chubb, about her experience of being deported to Dorsten and Biberach with her family in 1942. He also spoke to other deportees as well as expert historians, exploring Guernsey’s expansive wartime history.
‘The story is brought together in an authentic, informative and gripping narrative,’ said his nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous. ‘The podcast has helped to relay a much-overlooked aspect of our Second World War history to a wide audience, while creating a piece of audio history.’
‘I learnt about my grandma’s story years ago. After she went back to Biberach, she felt comfortable speaking about it publicly with me on BBC radio,’ said Mr Guillou. ‘Once I had set up my own podcast company and had the skills to create it, I made the leap and started the podcast.’
Mr Guillou said it was powerful to hear the stories of the deportees.
‘It’s definitely deepened my connection to the island,’ said Mr Guillou. ‘Doing this podcast has helped me and others to better understand Guernsey’s wartime history and how much of that history has impacted how Guernsey is today.
‘It was eye-opening. I’d love to look into more parts of Guernsey’s history.’
