MIKE KINDER has been nominated for the Sports Volunteer of the Year award for his continued contributions to local sport.
About
‘Obviously, you do these things for others and it’s nice to be recognised,’ said Mr Kinder.
‘This recognition is an acknowledgement of what I’ve done so it’s very fulfilling.’
After moving to Guernsey in 1983, Mr Kinder got involved with local sport through his role as head of PE at Elizabeth College, overseeing cricket and football at the school. Upon his retirement, he ran the hockey outreach programme in junior schools for 12 years.
Mr Kinder continues to help out in the junior schools as well as coaching, umpiring, and mentoring local hockey players.
Mr Kinder was also the chairman of the Guernsey Swimming Association for several years, supporting local swimmers through multiple Island Games.
‘The most rewarding part is giving people opportunities that they wouldn’t otherwise get,’ said Mr Kinder. ‘I want to allow others to discover what they can achieve and see that potential for themselves.’
In 2022, Mr Kinder was inducted into the Guernsey Sports Commission’s coaching roll of honour.
‘Mike has been involved with Guernsey sport for over 40 years now and his devotion has never wavered,’ said his nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous. ‘His impact on local cricket and hockey is immeasurable’.
