Laura Cohen

Laura Cohen has been nominated for Teacher of the Year

About

The best thing about teaching at Le Murier School is the students, according to one teacher nominated for Teacher of the Year.
Laura Cohen has spent 11 years at the school, where she is head of Paths (partnerships, adaptive learning,
therapeutic and health support).
‘I wasn’t expecting it. Any of the staff deserve this recognition because it isn’t one person, it’s a family,’ said Mrs Cohen.
Teaching highlights include residential stays overnight at the school and camping.
Her favourite part of teaching, she said, is supporting the children as they develop throughout their time at school.
Mrs Cohen previously worked in the UK as a teaching support assistant. Since moving to Guernsey, she has maintained a commitment to working for children with complex needs.
‘They come in at 11 and leave when they’re 19. A big satisfaction is when students leave and they say goodbye, then to see them in the community - it’s great.’
Her nominator said many of her former students, now adults, are well-prepared for life because of her inventive teaching and dedicated care.
‘Laura stands out as an exceptional educator due to her unwavering dedication. She frequently works from 7am until 9pm to support her students.’
