Kay Hardwick has been nominated as Angel of the Year
About
Kay Hardwick has worked as a cancer support nurse for the past three years, recently starting her role as breast cancer specialist nurse, supporting patients referred to the Breast Care Services.
Before completing her nurse training 40 years ago, Mrs Hardwick worked the night shift in a nursing home alongside a part-time role as a nanny.
‘She treats every patient with kindness, dignity and compassion, taking the time to understand not just their medical needs but their personal circumstances,’ said her nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.
‘She sees the whole person, not just their condition.
‘She often checks on patients outside of working hours if she has not had the opportunity to speak to them during the day,’ they said.
‘Though her compassion extends beyond her patients. She is always there for her colleagues, friends and family, offering support whenever it is needed.’
Working as a nurse gives Mrs Hardwick’s work life purpose, enjoying the variety each day brings.
‘I feel a genuine care for people and, through personal life experiences, I can relate to the feelings and emotions associated with unexpected situations and how overwhelming and exhausting it can make you feel,’ said Mrs Hardwick.
‘I try to use this understanding and apply it to individuals in the hope it can support patients during difficult times.
‘I may not be able to change the outcome of a situation but I just feel passionate about the care that I can offer to patients, to be there to listen, empathise, provide physical care and to help navigate to other support and healthcare practitioners.’
