About
‘Oh, how lovely,’ said Kate Walter after finding out she had been nominated for Teacher of the Year.
Mrs Walter moved to Guernsey in 2001 and has taught at Vale Primary School ever since.
‘The best part about working with the children is that every day brings a different experience,’ she said.
‘Watching the students achieve and seeing them be pleased with themselves once they’re able to understand the task is such a highlight.
‘It’s great finding out about the children’s lives and their weekends. It’s lovely when they open up.’ s
‘Mrs Walter has been a wonderful teacher for my son this year,’ said nominator Emily De Carteret. ‘She is very receptive to whatever situations arise in the classroom and really bolsters confidence and independence in the children.’
Mrs De Carteret credits Mrs Walter for creating a welcoming, nurturing, and fun classroom environment.
Nominator Andrea McKane is grateful to Mrs Walter for supporting her daughter when she was struggling in school due to her autism and epilepsy. Mrs Walter ensured her daughter had personalised visual reminders to support her in areas where she was struggling and did the same for the rest of the class to not single anyone out.
‘She has an absolutely phenomenal impact on those she teaches,’ said Mrs McKane. ‘She makes sure all the children are involved in engage in whatever way they need to access the curriculum.’
Mrs Walter said adapting lessons is about knowing the kids as individuals and recognising when they are finding something tricky and could use some support, whether that be through learning resources or simple reassurance.
