James De La Mare
James De La Mare has been nominated for Emergency Hero of the Year.
About
For over 10 years Sergeant De La Mare has been part of the Guernsey Police. Born in the UK, he moved to the island at the age of 14.
‘I’m honoured to be nominated. I don’t do the job I do to receive recognition,’ he said.
Public service runs in the family and he said that being a police officer was always something that was on his radar. ‘The job means everything to me.'
Earlier this year, PS De La Mare helped save the life of Tina Collenette, who suffered a heart attack and cardiac arrest.
‘James snapping into action as he did, shows that he really is a police officer at heart,’ said his nominator, who wanted to remain anonymous.
Sergeant De La Mare was off duty waiting at the bus terminus for a hair appointment. ‘It was the right place at the right time, some would say it was fate.’
When he arrived on the scene, Mrs Collenette had collapsed. Working on instinct, he gave her CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and made use of the defibrillator close by.
‘It’ll stick with me for sure. You’ve got to do a job as best you can for that person,’ he said.
After the incident Mrs Collenette reached out wanting to meet the person who saved her life.
‘It makes me so happy to know that it’s people like James who keep us safe,’ said his nominator.
