Island Dog Training Club
THE Island Dog Training Club has been nominated for the Sports Volunteer of the Year award.
About
‘Everyone is a volunteer and they all work tirelessly to help members, new and old, to help their dogs succeed,’ said their nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.
‘It’s an honour to be nominated,’ said Sara Sarre, the club’s president. ‘All the trainers enjoy doing the work they do as they get to share their love of dogs with others, while helping them succeed and train their dogs.
‘We all love seeing our clients and fellow members succeed and achieve with their dogs, all breeds, sizes, shapes and ages.
‘This organisation helped build and support my love and devotion to dogs and initially taught me how to become a trainer.’
The club is a charity that provides various types of dog training, including puppy training, competitive obedience, life training skills, and agility classes.
It has been running since 1961, starting off in a greenhouse while members and trainers worked hard to raise the funds to build their own clubroom.
‘We try to work as a team and have created more volunteer opportunities for our members in the form of various job roles, trying to share out the workload,’ said Ms Sarre. ‘Though that can be difficult as most of our members also work full time.’
The club provides training for its volunteers and funds or part-funds for trainers to go to the UK to take part in courses and workshops.
