Guernsey Disability Swimming
Guernsey Disability Swimming has been nominated for the Diversity and Inclusion Award.
About
It is a volunteer-led swimming club dedicated to enabling people with a wide range of disabilities to swim in a safe and supportive environment.
The club was put forward by Mike Spiller, who described the team as ‘extremely personable, helpful, and genuine.’
Mr Spiller has been regularly attending the club’s swimming sessions for two years as part of his stroke rehabilitation programme.
‘Everyone who wants to swim is helped and adapted to their individual need – be it providing access into the water, one-to-one support, or simply a time to enjoy a swim with friends,’ said Mr Spiller.
He commended the team for their efforts in building his confidence in the water. He began walking through the pool with support and is now training for the Castle Swim this summer.
‘It’s down to them as a group. It’s because they care for every member.
‘For an hour on Thursdays, Beau Sejour is noisy, joyful, full of friendship, and celebrates diversity and inclusion at its best.'
Adrian Sarchet, chairman of the club, said: ‘It’s incredibly rewarding watching the joy of achievement.
‘Whether it’s people swimming their first width or length, those journeys are unmissable for our volunteers.’
Mr Sarchet also wanted to use the nomination to recognise the club’s volunteers.
'I am so proud of all our volunteers. They are at the heart of what we do.’
