GFRS Cliff Rescue Team has been nominated for the Emergency Hero of the Year
About
‘They are experts, who have started off as recreational climbers and now they have turned their passion into a service which can help the people of Guernsey,’ said their nominator.
After coming under the jurisdiction of Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service in 2018, the Cliff Rescue Team, who are all volunteers, have been called out many times ranging from rescuing people from cliffs and also animals.
‘It is really rewarding work, we are helping people in difficult situations, and also we want to rescue the animals as if we did not, the owner would,’ said nominee Steve Dorrity who is one of the three principles of the team.
‘We feel lucky that we are able to do it, and by using problem solving, we are confident and trained in these scenarios to be able to rescue that person efficiently,’ said nominee Barny Hamon, another principle.
‘What you can end up seeing can be challenging, and it can really stick with you, but with the people we help, they never mean to get into trouble, they find themselves in distressing situations and that is when we step in to help,’ said nominee cliff rescue team member Ben Francis.
‘Access to the cliffs can be challenging, because of the undergrowth and unstable cliff edges, so problem solving is critical,’ said nominee cliff rescue Principle Dave Richings.
