Dr Thomas Saunders
Dr Thomas Saunders has been nominated for Angel of the Year
About
After qualifying as a doctor 25 years ago, Dr Thomas Saunders began his specialist training as a geriatrician in 2007 and has been consulting in Guernsey at the Medical Specialist Group for the past six years.
‘During my time as a junior doctor, I was fortunate to work with some inspiring geriatricians who showed me the importance of doing small things well and by doing so how you can make a significant difference to a patient and their family,’ said Dr Saunders.
He said the most rewarding part of his role is getting to know the story behind the patient. ‘It’s amazing the lives that people have led and in medicine I feel privileged to get to know my patients and to focus the care on the aspects that matter the most to them.’
‘Dr Saunders was compassionate in all aspects of his care. It was clear to see that as the patient I was his primary focus during his encounters with me both in hospital and at outpatient appointments,’ said his nominator.
‘Dr Saunders left no stone unturned when it came to finding out what caused me to become unwell. He really advocated for me to ensure that we got to a diagnosis and that I received the support and treatment I needed to ensure I could get back to being the person I was before becoming unwell, which was really important.
‘Guernsey people are really lucky to have him as a consultant physician.’
Dr Saunders said his nomination is a reflection of the excellent colleagues he works with who support him to deliver the best care for patients possible.
