Dawn Cooper has been nominated for Teacher of the Year
About
Dawn Cooper qualified as a teacher in 1996 and has been teaching in Guernsey ever since. She has been at La Mare de Carteret Primary School since 2018, now PSHE subject lead and rights and citizenship Lead.
‘Mrs Cooper is the calmest, most caring and warm teacher I’ve ever met. I know my child is in the best environment when in Mrs Cooper’s class,’ said nominator Lucy James.
‘Mrs Cooper is an exceptional teacher,’ said another nominee.
Another nominator, Gemma Reardon, said, ‘Mrs Cooper is a great role model. She is kind and caring and will always make time to talk to her pupils if they are finding anything difficult and to make sure they’re okay.’
‘As a teacher, I am in the privileged position of having the opportunity to make a real impact on a child’s learning journey. It’s wonderful when a child has been working on understanding a concept and they finally achieve their goal,’ said Mrs Cooper.
Mrs Cooper most enjoys building positive relationships with learners, as well as guardians, and ensuring every child feels valued.
‘The lovely thing about teaching for so long on Guernsey is that I still meet so many children that I taught out and about, and
it’s wonderful to hear what they are doing now.’
As rights and citizenship lead, Mrs Cooper encourages the children to use their voice to advocate for their rights and the rights of other children, both in their community and globally. She has also been working with the Health Improvement Commission to establish a ‘snack shack’, encouraging children to try new fruits and vegetables.
