Darren Broad has been nominated for Teacher of the Year

About

Head of science at Blanchelande College said he loves his team and his students after being nominated for Teacher of the Year.
Darren Broad started teaching in 2009 after chatting with a friend who suggested he try it out. He taught in Spain and Bermuda before coming to Guernsey.
‘The head of science asked if I wanted to present a Mission to Mars to the Year 7 group, as it was part of their curriculum. She knew I was obsessed with space. I jumped at the chance.’
He moved among positions in the senior leadership team at Blanchelande, switching from head of Phase to head of science.
One highlight of the job, he said, includes watching students have a ‘light bulb’ moment during his lesson where it all clicks into place.
Another is seeing the students have enough confidence to freely ask and answer questions in class.
‘It shows they have trust in me and the environment I have created.’
The anonymous student who nominated him said, ‘We can chat to him about our problems or how we are feeling, or just have a laugh with
him.’
Lessons are entertaining, they said, but also fascinating, as he teaches physics using many hands-on activities.
Mr Broad complimented his students. He said they are naturally inquisitive and they want to push boundaries.
‘Helping them discover themselves and find answers to questions they did not know they wanted answering is fantastic to see each day.’
