Darcey Hodgson

DARCEY HODGSON has been nominated for the Young Achiever of the Year award for her dedication to athletics and success at this year’s Island Games in Orkney.

About

‘Darcey is a versatile athlete,’ said her nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous. ‘At just 15, she made a big breakthrough, running an 800m that placed her second on Guernsey’s senior all-time list.’
Darcey, 17, also landed herself on Guernsey’s all-time list for the 400m hurdles during her under-20s debut this year in Winchester. She then clocked in at over a second and a half quicker at the Island Games, securing the silver medal.
Her success at the Island Games did not end there as she achieved 800m gold, beating the host island’s top athlete by over two seconds. Darcey also helped Guernsey women’s 400m relay team to silver.
‘Orkney was absolutely amazing,’ said Darcey.
'I was really lucky to experience it and to have had such a great season.’
Darcey was grateful to have the opportunity to show what she was capable of at the Games.
With athletics often branded as an individual sport, Darcey said it can be difficult to motivate herself.
She credited the support of her coaches down at the Footes Lane track, always being there to talk and providing tailor-made training, keeping her accountable.
Darcey is set to run at the final local meeting of the Aztec Track and Field Series this month before going into her winter training.
