Claire Wakefield
CLAIRE WAKEFIELD has been nominated for Sports Volunteer of the Year.
About
Since last year Mrs Wakefield has been a committee member and the membership secretary of the Guernsey Rugby Academy but has been involved for the last 12 years because her two sons both play.
‘I’m really chuffed to be nominated, it’s an honour,’ she said.
Every other year the Academy travels to Jersey to take part in the Siam Cup, the second-oldest rugby cup in the world.
Due to the absence of inter-island ferries and only one scheduled flight, getting a total of 487 people, including six- to 18-year-olds, to Jersey in May seemed impossible, but Mrs Wakefield made it happen.
‘Claire organised the travel of around 500 people between the islands, including players, parents and coaches,’ said her nominator, who would like to remain anonymous.
Although a team effort with the support of the Academy committee and the patience of parents, ‘Claire was the main driver in the operation.’ Mrs Wakefield managed to organise four flights and five ferries to get everyone over successfully, all on the same day.
‘As a parent I know it’s one of life’s pleasures to do something like this, so I knew we needed to get the players over,’ said Mrs Wakefield, she added that the success of the efforts felt like a sense of achievement for her.
‘It would have been a massive shame if we couldn’t compete in the Siam Cup. We’re all grateful she managed to pull it off,’ said her nominator.
