‘Knowing that you can have a positive impact on a child’s life is incredibly rewarding,’ said Cathy Rirsch and Ben Martin in response to getting nominated for the award. ‘As a family we enjoy spending time together and giving the children as many opportunities to develop their own interests. Like any family, we have busy days and quiet days, but we try to create a supportive, welcoming and relaxed home environment. 
‘It’s lovely to be able to provide a safe and supportive environment and to see the small steps forward that can make such a big difference.’ 
‘We’ve been fostering for six years. It has been a really rewarding experience and, although there are challenges along the way, we’ve learnt a lot and wouldn’t change the decision to foster.’ 
The couple were nominated by Peter and Helena McGovern. ‘They have cared for a number of children over the years and give them a safe and nurturing home environment for as long as they are needed,’ they said.
‘They care for the children as their own, giving them unconditional love, whatever the difficulties they may face. 
‘To see how these children have grown and developed emotionally, socially and intellectually over the last year is very heartwarming and this is all down to Cathy and Ben’s calmness, generosity, unbelievable patience and understanding.’
