Carly Foad has been nominated for Teacher of the Year
About
After starting at the Guernsey Institute as a lecturer in health and social care last August, Carly Foad has been nominated for the award.
Mrs Foad has a background in midwifery and has always loved helping others learn and develop. Eager to teach, she has started lecturing and studying for her PGCE, all while practising as a midwife.
Nominator Leanne Sarre said she struggled to put into words the impact that Mrs Foad had on her. ‘We want to listen and learn in her classroom,’ said Miss Sarre. ‘Her impact is massive.’
She credited Mrs Foad as the reason she was able to get through the academic year. ‘She wouldn’t let me quit,’ said Miss Sarre.
Mrs Foad said: ‘Midwifery and teaching both come down to building trust, adapting to individual needs and supporting people through important stages of their lives. Whether it’s helping a family welcome a new baby or helping a student realise they’re capable of more than they thought, both are hugely rewarding.
‘Health and social care is a profession where the people you train go on to look after others, so I try to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and pushing themselves. They learn best when they know someone’s in their corner.
‘A few of my students have carried some really heavy things this year and they’ve still walked through the door and kept going. That takes a kind of courage you can’t teach or put on a certificate, and honestly those are the students I’m proudest of.’
