About
More should be done to promote Guernsey as a destination for group tours for older people, according to one man nominated for doing just that.
Bill Bowen worked with social networking organisation 41 Club – which provides a way for members of Round Table to continue their friendships – to bring 87 people to the island from all over the UK for a walking weekend in October.
Mr Bowen said he was surprised to be nominated.
‘I wasn’t doing it for a prize, I just enjoy the island so much that I wanted to give back to the people.
‘I couldn’t have done it without the help of others. I would be happy to help anyone who wants to do something similar.
‘Guernsey could do much more with tours, especially during the colder months, to bring business to the island,’ he said.
Nominator Sarah Bamford said: ‘All Bill ever wanted to do was share the island with everyone. It’s really about what he has done for Guernsey, he’s put it on the map.’
Mrs Bamford added that the walking weekend took a year for Mr Bowen to put together, including back-up first-aiders and guides.
‘He organised everything, all people had to do was book flights. He even organised for people to be picked up from the airport.’
