Bernie Coutu has been nominated for the Bailiwick Community Hero award.
About
Fourteen years ago, Miss Coutu started the Bridge Neighbourhood Watch to help bring the community together. Although she runs it alone, her sister, Lyn Duport, has often joined in.
‘It’s being in the community, doing something and meeting people,’ said Miss Coutu.
Last year both Miss Coutu and her sister received a letter from the head of law enforcement for all the work they do for Neighbourhood Watch.
‘I think what Bernie does for her community is incredible, so much dedication goes into it,’ said her nominator, who wishes to remain anonymous.
They also praised Miss Coutu for her unwavering desire to keep the Bridge lovely for the whole community.
‘I started because there were so many things going wrong and I wanted to make it a beautiful place to live,’ said Miss Coutu.
‘I wanted to clean it up and make it lovely.'
Neighbourhood Watch involves many duties including when Miss Coutu cleaned the bins across the Bridge and when she gave it a tidy up for the 80th Liberation celebrations.
Miss Coutu also raises money for the chapel at the hospital. ‘I truly think Bernie should continue to keep up all the work she does so dutifully,’ said the nominator.
