Alan Gough

Since moving to Guernsey in 1981, Alan Gough has been continuously involved in the local music scene, for which he has been nominated for the Arts Contribution of the Year award. 
Mr Gough formed the Guernsey Chamber Choir and Orchestra in 1983, the Guernsey Youth Jazz Orchestra in 1982, the Guernsey Symphonic Winds in 2005, and the Guernsey Bach Choir in 2007. 
‘Alan’s musical contribution across numerous choirs and instrumental groups over the years is unique among local conductors, in my opinion, in that he injects such love for what he does that it inspires a similar response from those fortunate enough to be in his choir or group,’ said nominator Richard De La Rue. ‘I consider him to be the island’s most gifted conductor.
‘His energy and enthusiasm is infectious and consequently he obtains the highest standards of music-making. He uses his natural wit to lighten any rehearsal and he is loved by his fans and supporters. 
‘Guernsey is fortunate to have him in its midst. He has continuously influenced the lives of countless musicians and enthralled audiences.’ 
Mr Gough said: ‘What I enjoy most is getting others to take part and feel that togetherness that comes from producing something in a group.' 
Currently conducting the Guernsey Symphonic Winds and the Guernsey Bach Choir, Mr Gough’s ensembles are on break until September, when they will restart rehearsals for their next concerts. The ensembles also puts on charity events, previously raising £500 for Young Lives vs Cancer and £3,000 for the Poppy Appeal. 
Mr Gough enjoys incorporating the musicians’ feedback into the performance and seeing the piece flourish. 
‘It’s wonderful working with a group like that. I look forward to it every week,’ he said.
